Truth Vs. Lie

What is a lie?

A lie is a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood (

Now, what is a truth?

A truth is the true or actual state of a matter: a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like (

We live in a world where lying is unacceptable yet done every single day. People lie to make other people happy. But at what cost? This world is the biggest thief when it comes to stealing our chance at knowing the truth, and every day a new lie is told to us.

I can’t begin to count the number of times I have seen the phrase “follow your heart”, let alone all the responses to believing in God that the world has. I’ve heard responses like, “God is not enough for me”, “God didn’t work for me”, and “I can follow God tomorrow”. When asked about their sin, people say, “well, it’s a one-time thing”, “it only affects me”, and “well, it feels good, so it must be good”.

I’m going to say something that may upset some people: these things are lies. Complete lies. The world tells us that they are truths. But we see in God’s Word that these “truths” are complete lies; that all this negativity is of the world and not of God and what He has for us.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (ESV)

To conform means to “act in accord with the prevailing standards, attitudes, practices, etc., of society or a group” (

We are not to conform to this world but we are to be transformed by renewing our mind. We are to test what we are told so we can discern what is the will of God, which is good and acceptable. But what are we to test it against? Well, we are to do as the Jews did in Acts.

Acts 17:11 says, “Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” (ESV)

They tested what they were told, against the word of God. The word of God holds truths and not lies. Paul tells us this in 2 Timothy.

2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (ESV)

Right there Paul says that it is profitable for us to test what the world tells against the word of God. He says that if we do this it will teach us, correct us, and train us in righteousness. All of which we need in our lives.

Psalms 119:105 says, “Your world is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (ESV)

God’s Word is to be our lamp, our guide book, and our map. These verses in Acts, 2 Timothy, and Psalms prove that.

This month we will be diving into the lies that the world tells us and testing them against the word of God. I pray that we can open your eyes and give you the chance to know the truth that God has for you.
