“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10-11 NIV)
As Christians, God has called us to be his stewards. He has blessed us with many gifts and talents that we can use to serve others. But why is serving so important??
The big questions are: why do we serve in the first place? What’s our motive for serving?
Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (NIV)
We have the unique privilege to be able to say that Christ lives in us, which is absolutely incredible. It’s a huge blessing to be called His own, but it also comes with responsibilities. And serving is a HUGE responsibility for us as Christians. Why? Because having been “crucified with Christ”, we must BE LIKE CHRIST. And He is the greatest example of a servant.
In Mark 10:45 it says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (NIV)
The greatest service Jesus did for us, was dying on the cross. (If you check out the passages in John 13, you’ll see another great example of Jesus being a servant to His own disciples.) So if we are to be like Christ, then one of the greatest decisions we can make as a Christian is to serve as Jesus served. He is the very reason serving is so important. We serve out of our love for Him, and because of His command to love others.
John 15 12 says, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (NIV)
Jesus loved us SO much that He died for us, and now He commands us to love others just the same. And what better way to show love, than to serve?
In Matthew 5:14-16 it says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (NIV)
This is our mandate. We want others to know who Christ is and realize the great service that He did for us, and serving is one of the best ways we can show others that kind of love.
So back to the question – why is serving so important? Because through serving, we can show others the same love that Christ showed us. Through serving, we can show others who Christ is.
