Stirring Up Good Works (Day Sixteen)

Serving is an active pursuit, not a passive one.

As if serving others was not tiring enough, it has to be active? Yes, believe it or not, serving is not something that just happens, but rather something that we have to seek out opportunities for and take those opportunities. Paul tells Titus to “be ready for every good work” (Titus 3:1). This conjures up a military picture of battle-readiness. We need to be ready for each and every opportunity for good works that comes our way. This is the first of two mindsets that we will quickly look at:

The Battle-Ready Mindset

We need to have a battle-ready mindset towards good works—prepared for any opportunity that may come our way.

Then in Hebrews it says, “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24). Not only should we be ready for opportunities to do good works, but we should also be considering how to stir up good works. This also conjures up a military picture of strategizing and plotting. We literally need to plot how to stir up good works and love. This brings us to our second mindset:

The Strategist’s Mindset

We need to have a strategist’s mindset towards good works—plotting opportunities for good works.

Honestly, one of the reasons why we do not do good works is because we do not recognize opportunities that come our way. We are not actively seeking out opportunities to serve others and often we are secretly hoping that the opportunities will not find us. We are lazy and do not wish to put in the effort to serve one another. Even if we are willing to serve, we rarely go looking for chances to serve. This is something that must be remedied if we are to grow spiritually. Jesus came to earth and served us sinners so humbly. It is the LEAST that we can do to serve one another.

We must be ready and we must be plotting opportunities to serve one another.
