We are at war with this world and we wake up every day fighting new trials, past struggles, bitter pain, and legions of Demons being thrown against us. So the question is then, are we prepared? Do we have what it takes to stand up and fight, for Christ, against whatever is thrown against us? The awesomeness of our God is that He has given us the means to stand against the world. The apostle Paul tells us to be prepared and to on the armor of God, so we can stand against Satan and whatever he throws at us.
“10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.”
Paul is comparing the means which Christ gave us to stand against Satan as armor because we are in a battle! Interestingly enough Paul compares one of the most important attributes we need, righteousness, to one of the most important pieces a soldier needs to wear, a breastplate. You see, the breastplate is the central piece of the armor because it protects the heart, but why does Paul compare righteousness to a breastplate?
“4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. 5 The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness. 6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust. 7 When the wicked dies, his hope will perish, and the expectation of wealthy perishes too. 8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, and the wicked walks into it instead. 9 With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.”
Without the breastplate of righteousness, our hearts will be exposed and we will be more susceptible to defeat! The Righteousness of Christ that penetrates and protects our hearts, is what transforms our hearts into righteous behavior. If we put on the breastplate of righteousness, we will see an outward manifestation of the transformation occurring in our hearts. It is not just enough that we believe in Christ; no, we must let Him transform our hearts. If we truly are wearing the breastplate of righteousness and letting Christ transform our hearts for His glory, then it will be seen as we walk this life.
“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
As we wear Christ’s breastplate of righteousness and as we let it transform our hearts, it creates a lifestyle change of putting into practice of what we truly believe in our hearts. As we let Christ transform us to His image, our choices become more righteous. It is this righteous transformation and the godly choices that will protect us from further temptation and deception.
So ask yourself….
Am I wearing the breastplate of righteousness?
Am I letting Christ transform my heart?
Am I ready for battle?
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
