Abandoning the World

When speaking about the meaning of our name, I am seeing a character breaking away and lifting from chains and the world, as certain elements still try to entangle him. I can see the pile of his shadow and dirty clothes lying in a heap as the earth disappears behind him. He is reaching his hand out to the light from above, as determination and joy fill his face. I see a guy leaving behind his will, his old self, and his own plans for the purpose of being part of something bigger; fulfilling the plans of Someone greater. To me, that is reckless abandon.

When you were a child, your parents usually told you what you could do and what you really shouldn’t do. They directed your ways of thinking, and sometimes there was a mentor or two that assisted them in that role and helped shape you into who you are today. However, you’re coming to the stage in your life where you are going to be responsible for what you stand for and what not. Not because your parents or the pastor tells you something is right or wrong, but because you decide that for yourself. What will you base your own values and morals on? Who will tell you what to believe? Whose word do you take as the truth in a matter?

If you truly take God on His Word and you strive to live a life dedicated to what He requires of you, you ought to base your values and morals off His Word and what He taught, did, and said. It is important to have the Bible as a guideline and handbook for our lives as Christians. You cannot live something you do not believe.

How can you sit with your head in the Bible and your body in the world? Honestly, you can’t. If God’s Word truly lives in your heart, you can do not but obey Him.

Do not love the world [of sin that opposes God and His precepts], nor the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust and sensual craving of the flesh and the lust and longing of the eyes and the boastful pride of life [pretentious confidence in one’s resources or in the stability of earthly things]—these do not come from the Father, but are from the world.” (1 John 2:15-16 AMP)

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),  finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.” (Ephesians 5:8 NKJV)

I am convinced time and time again that we cannot be fully Christian/wholly saved and still desire what the world offers. If God’s Word truly lives in your head and is written on your heart, you cannot help but be moved to listen to it. The Word of God is unlike any other book ever written. It cuts and prunes through the Spirit’s power. It speaks to the deepest parts of our souls, and it addresses all the fears we might have. It is truly unbelievable and so powerful! You could speak thousands of man’s words and never reach someone, but send them a Bible verse and it changes everything. Never underestimate the power of God’s Word.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV)

This world keeps flashing all it has to offer, trying to intrigue us, in the form of entertainment, the ‘way’ of dressing, the ‘way’ of talking. So much of what this world has to offer is 100% contrary to what God teaches us in His Word. The world despises the light because it exposes their evil deeds which can only be done in the dark.

“For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” (John 3:20-21 NKJV)

The world says to ‘fit in’. We are told to get on the same level as the world. When your friends go out to the bar, join them, and show Christ’s love there. No! You are not to partake in the dark things of the world. God’s Word is so strict on it. He says you should not even mention the dark things or even refer to the sins of the world! Abandon the advice of the world.

“But sexual immorality and all [moral] impurity [indecent, offensive behavior] or greed must not even be hinted at among you, as is proper among saints [for as believers our way of life, whether in public or in private, reflects the validity of our faith]. Let there be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse [obscene or vulgar] joking, because such things are not appropriate [for believers]; but instead speak of your thankfulness [to God].” (Ephesians 5:3-4 AMP)

There are so many issues we are faced with today that are truly very simplistic and not supposed to be complicated at all. If the world stuck to the guidelines as given by God’s Word, we wouldn’t have nearly as many problems as we do today. His plans and purpose has always been to spare us the pain we so often cause ourselves. His perfect ideals were to protect us from the traps and dangers of life. It was set out to guide us on the right path. Abandon the world’s ideas.

But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” (1 John 2:5-6 NKJV)

Issues like creation. Today we are told by the world that it was a ‘big bang’ or by chance over millions of years, evolution. People are trying to understand and explain what their brains cannot grasp. However, God is very clear in Genesis 1. He spoke it into being! There have been theories that argue it could’ve been 6 seconds, 6 weeks, or 6000 days. No! God says 6 days. 6 literal days. Plain and simple; straight forward. Abandon the world’s theories.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.  God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day”. (Genesis 1:1-5 NIV)

Issues like sex before marriage. The world says “try it out”, “do as you please when you please”. God says very clearly in His Word: no fornication and uncleanness, no man is to lie with another woman but His wife. His rules were given to protect us. Guard our hearts. Abandon your flesh and its cravings! Obey God.

“Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.” (1 Corinthians 6:13b NKJV)

“Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.  Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:18-20 NKJV)

What about something like swearing? Well, the world says it is a good way of getting rid of your frustrations. But God says no evil speaking must proceed from your mouth. Why do you think people are bothered by it? Because God created you with a conscience. He knows you know good from evil as a human being; He is our Maker. Abandon the world’s way of handling matters – do it God’s way.

“Therefore, putting away lying, Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour,” for we are members of one another. “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labour, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:25-32 NKJV)

Reckless abandonment, based on God’s Word, means forsaking all you want, desire, and dream of for the sake of doing God’s will in a matter. It means denying the power of your flesh and the evil desires of your heart to do what God requires instead.

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.” (Galatians 5:16-17 NKJV)

Whose word will you be taking for it? Please realize that soon you are responsible for the course you set your life upon. Whose ideas, theories, or advice will you take – the world’s or God’s Word?

“As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is short-sighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:3-11 NKJV)
