Following and discerning what God’s will is can be a tough thing. Thankfully, we have God’s Word to guide us in that. There are many commands in scriptures that we are called to obey, and obedience to God is one of the best ways to align ourselves with His will.
So…what are some of those commands?
“Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.'” – Luke 9:23 (NIV)
This first one is why Reckless Abandon Ministries exists – to challenge and encourage those around us to deny themselves and live lives of reckless abandonment. This is extremely important, because only one person can reign in our hearts: us or God. In order to fully commit to Christ, we must deny ourselves the throne of our hearts and allow God to reign over our lives. When we do this, we succeed in obeying the will of God.
Spread the Gospel
“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’” – Mark 16:15
This command is rather self-explanatory: go! Share the gospel! Proclaim to those around you the amazing and glorious work of Christ on the cross, and the redemption that we have through His sacrifice.
God commands us in the book of Matthew to do two things: love our enemies, and love our neighbors. Loving people well is SO important. After all, it was Christ’s love for us that compelled Him to lay His life down so that we – sinful, evil humans – might be saved, redeemed, and forgiven. Who knows? The love you show someone could be the very thing that pushes them into the arms of God!
When it comes to following God’s will, you will often get confused, feel doubt, or not fully understand how something could possibly be the will of a perfect God. But, I firmly believe that no matter what happens, if we are striving after Christlikeness, if we are striving to fully commit to God, to spread the Gospel across the nation, to love others like Christ loved us, then we will be following God’s will.
If we are obeying God and the commandments that He has given us, then that is a very good first step towards aligning ourselves with His will.
In your journal, write down three ways you can be intentionally following these commands. If there is an area in your life that you need to let God reign in, write that down, share about it with your accountability partner, and ask them to pray for you. If there is someone you know that doesn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus, make it a point to share the gospel with them sometime this month. And if there is someone you could be loving a little better than you have been, do your best to show them some extra love this week.
