Mercy Flowed

“Oh the precious blood that flowed from Mercy’s side
Washed away my sin
When Christ my Saviour died.”

(The Precious Blood by Sovereign Grace Music)

When I was starting to prepare for this article, and trying to wrap my mind around what I could possibly say that would do this article justice, this song was sung in our church. I absolutely love the powerful images that this song produces. Christ didn’t give mercy; Christ is mercy. Just like one of our authors, Bri, was talking about in the intro for this series, “…our God does not just embody these attributes, He is them.”

The blood that washed away my sins and yours, came from Mercy. To me, this image is so powerful; I have had trouble trying to explain it. Blood flowed from Mercy. Blood flowed from Compassion, from Love – undeserved. Blood flowed from the sacrifice we didn’t deserve. Blood flowed from Mercy.

“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.” (Titus 3:5 ESV)

We were saved because He is Mercy. We didn’t deserve it. We didn’t earn it. We weren’t more righteous than everyone else. We have nothing to offer God that could persuade Him that we are fit to be saved or to even come near His presence. There is nothing that any of us could have done to convince God that we deserve a chance. Yet the beauty of the Gospel is that we didn’t need to – God had a plan to save us from the beginning. From the time that Adam and Eve brought sin into His perfect world, He had a plan. Because He is Mercy.

His plan was to send the perfect sacrifice, the perfect ransom that will buy us back.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV)

God gave mankind the most precious gift. A gift none of us could deserve. A gift that gives us a second chance. A gift that will save us. He gave us this gift because He is Mercy.  What else could I need to say?

There is nothing in this world that even comes close to being as amazing as this.
