The New Self: An Introduction

Actions speak louder than words.

This popular quote needs no introduction. Maybe I am assuming a bit much, but I would think that everyone has heard this at least once in their lives. If you haven’t, then I think you would catch up pretty quickly!

This little quote is a good way to introduce this month’s topic: The New self. We will be discussing tools that we can use to build a new self and a new life. What are tools for living like a Christian? They are part of our everyday lives and experiences. We have chosen a few to discuss in more detail in this month.

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24

Why is this important enough for us to write about? Well, our lives are going to be different than they were before. The way we use the tools we are given, like social media; or the normal parts of our lives, like relationships with other people; as well as the things that come with being a Christian; they are going to be different. We are going to be different. We are supposed to change into someone new when we are born again in Christ.

“You have been set apart as holy to the LORD your God, and he has chosen you from all the nations of the earth to be his own special treasure.”
Deuteronomy 14:2 (NLT)

Our motivation for doing things is supposed to be different from that of the rest of the world. As Christians, God is going to be the most important person in our lives. He is going to be at the center of everything that we do. At least, that is how it is supposed to be. I haven’t perfected that yet, and constantly need reminding. However, when God is at the center of our relationships, our use of social media, and so on, the way that we use them or act in them does change. It takes on a quality that makes people notice, which is the whole point. Our lives should reflect our faith and in that way make our God known. It should reflect how much we have changed.

The purpose of the articles that are to follow are to show how we should be using the tools we have been given; how to use those tools in a Christian way. A way that shows that we are different and honors the amazing God who calls us His Children. A way that creates a new and improved version of each one of us.

So join us for this month and let’s see if we can all make our actions (our new self) speak louder than our words.
