Whatever we have is from God, whether time, resources or money. We need to realise this in order to know that it is not because we are so great and accomplished, but rather, it all comes from His hands.
The topic of generosity with money might be a difficult concept for some, but to others it would seem like a no-brainer. It all depends on the heart and the outlook on finances.
Personally I think that this topic is the nearest to a physical object which we can be generous with- however it is not that plain and simple.
The Honest Truth:
There are several aspects to the paper notes that the world revolves around. It is said that with money you can buy anything. But that is very far from the truth. Money does not buy peace, grace, genuine love, or joy. The Bible calls money the root of all evil.
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” – 1 Timothy 6:10
It also says that you can’t serve both God and ‘mammon’ (money). See, it is a trap which is always open for any of us to fall into. We can so easily (and subconsciously) be sucked into the black hole of living to own or earn more.
In Luke 10:2-4 we are reminded of what our actual mission is- not earning money, but rather furthering the kingdom and trusting God.
“Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road.” – Luke 10:2-4
We are not to be distracted by money. We should use all we have unto God’s glory and stay focused on our mission and calling.
Theory and Expectation:
In Matthew 25 Jesus tells the parable with the servants and the talents. Through this parable, we see that we are expected to be faithful in what we have been given, faithful in service and usage to honour and glorify Him. If you have been entrusted with ‘a little’, then you are to be faithful in how you use that– if you have been entrusted with much (and I think this one is harder) then you are expected to be faithful in that.
We are expected to give our tithes, which is a tenth of what we have been given, to the Lord. This is a Biblical principle on how we give back to God with a heart of gratitude and faithfulness. We are required to give this tenth to the church. What will be done with your money is not suppose to hinder you from giving; you have only been asked to give your part.
“And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the Lord.” – Leviticus 27:30
“And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord.” – Leviticus 27:32
But we aren’t only requested to tithe–we are also asked to love our neighbour as ourselves. What does this mean exactly? Well for one it means that when you see someone suffering and you can do something to help, then DO IT! You will find that it is actually true that it is more blessed to give than it is to receive. The joy that comes from blessing someone with a necessity is so immense that it will likely even beam from your face.
I can testify that we have been in extremely hard financial situations and several times a fellow brother or sister’s obedience unto God has enabled us to buy the necessities or to pay the electricity bill. Time and time again we have seen God’s faithful hand in the form of fellow believers who simply obeyed the Lord.
And what a privilege to be able to be God’s hands and feet in such a direct way! But we need wisdom in what and where and to whom we are to give. This wisdom and discernment can only come from God and He will reveal it to you as you ask Him.
“The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself” – Proverbs 11:25
So How Can I Give?
If you do not know of anyone in a financial crisis, trouble or any other form of need nearby, there are always many other organizations that you can get involved in that God may lay on your heart, such as Bible translating companies, a missionary family, a mission organization, a medical facility, a summer camp, a church outreach program, a Christian band, author, children’s ministries.
The Seed company – https://theseedcompany.org/ Translates Bibles
Open Doors – https://www.opendoors.org/
Voice of the Martyrs – http://www.persecution.com/ Persecuted brothers and sisters
Compassion International – http://www.compassion.com/ Children in need
Knit-a-square – http://www.knit-a-square.com/ Provides blankets for children with AIDS and other needs
CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship) – https://www.cefonline.com/ Teaching children about the gospel and creating material to teach from (great for Sunday school lessons)
These are just a few of the thousands of organisations where you can lend a hand.
The ways to give are truly endless and therefore you need God’s guidance as to where He requests your support to go.
“He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.” – Proverbs 22:9
